What is it?

MagicCookie Monster is a free (Emailware, really) utility that can help you manage your Netscape Navigator or Communicator cookies on your Macintosh computer.

What does it do?

MagicCookie Monster allows you to selectively inspect and delete cookies from your Netscape browser. It supports Netscape's multiple User Profiles.

Why do I need it?

Browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Communicator saves "cookies" on your computer whenever you visit various websites. Those websites stores your viewing preferences with the help of cookies; the positive side is that the website can save alot of your time by storing your preferences in cookies, instead of having you enter them every single time you visit their site. Unfortunately, there can be a downside to cookies - various websites may use cookies to track your viewing habits on the web - a potential invasion of your privacy! Do you really want IKnowWhatYoureDoingRightNow.com to know that you're looking at sites concerning your medical health? Who knows what they're doing with that information! It's wise to prevent such unwanted and unwarranted snooping, by regularly maintaining your cookies list with the help of a program such as MagicCookie Monster. Save the cookies you want to save, and get rid of the other stale cookies that might just one day come back to bite you.

System Requirements

  • Apple Macintosh PowerPC computer
  • System 7.5.5 or greater (Mac OS 8.1 or greater recommended)
  • 2MB free RAM
  • 0.5 MB disc space
  • Netscape Navigator/Communicator, version 4.x

Q & A

  • Q: How much do I have to pay to use the software?
    • MagicCookie Monster is Emailware - that just means that it's free (but not in the "Public Domain") for as long as you want to use it; the only registration requirement is that you would email me a quick note with info on the number of copies you're using, and any comments on the program! Please help out with my development costs (without paying a penny!), by signing up for FREE DSL (internet service faster than a regular modem) here (Register for and download the free Winfire Browser Assistant to signup) - it'll help me offset some costs for developing the free MagicCookie Monster software, and allow me to develop more quality software for the Mac ... as well as giving you free and fast internet service, faster than your modem can provide! !
  • Q: How do I use MagicCookie Monster?
    • It's pretty straightforward. Download it and click on the MagicCookie Monster icon to start the program. Select the User Profile you want to manage cookies in from the popup menu at the top of the main window - a list of cookies in that profile will show up in the listbox below the popup menu. Select a cookie by clicking it once, and to delete it, click the "Trash It!" button. Select multiple cookies by holding down the Command (Apple) key while clicking on each cookie. Double click on a specific cookie to see detailed info on it in the "Cookie Details" window. Click the "I'm Done!" button when you're done managing your cookies among your various User Profiles - you will be given a chance to save your cookie changes or not.
  • Q: I've mistakenly deleted a cookie I wanted to keep - what should I do?
    • If you made changes to your cookies and saved your changes, and you want to reverse your changes, you can find your old MagicCookie file stored in the Trash. Just drag it out of the trash to retrieve your previous cookie settings, and place it back into your User Profile folder in the "Netscape Users" folder in your Preferences folder.
  • Q: How do I manage cookies in profiles other than the ones located at the default location (Preferences:Netscape Users)?
    • In MagicCookie Monster, go to the "Edit" menu, select "Profiles ...", and click the "Add" button. Find the "MagicCookie" file you want to manage, and MagicCookie Monster will add it to the list of managable profiles. Clicking the "Trash" button after selecting a profile will hide that profile from MagicCookie Monster's list of managable profiles.
  • Q: Why doesn't MagicCookie Monster support Internet Explorer cookies?
    • Internet Explorer 4+ provides its own cookie management utility in its Preferences.
  • Q: I'm having other problems with the software - what should I do?
    • Email me at drjsoftware@hotmail.com and tell me about any errors you see, and what you were doing right before your received your error message. Check back to my webpage at http://download.at/drjsoftware for updates to the program and for other upcoming software!
  • Q: What features will be added to future versions of MagicCookie Monster?
    • Support for non-default preference/MagicCookie locations - new feature in version 1.0 beta 10!
    • Secure Cleanup of cookies - Prevent people from "undeleting" your cookies you've deleted
    • "Tasty Cookies" feature - mark and prevent accidental deletion of cookies you want to save
    • Cookie data modification - Modify individual attributes of cookies
    • Preferences - Additional settings for MCM
    • More features to come ...
